Background

The Kanona & Prattsburgh Railroad was chartered on April 4, 1887. A principal investor was Prattsburg businessman, Martin Pinney, who put up $3,000 towards construction of the shortline. His initial investment boosted local confidence and approximately $75,000 more was raised.

The line was to extend from Prattsburg through the valley to Kanona. The total distance was a mere 11.44 miles. At Kanona the K&P would connect with the Erie main line. At that time the K&P officials contracted with the Erie to supply all cars necessary for through business such as coaches for excursions. The first trip on the line was October 11, 1889.
